“Now I should like to give the presumably very surprising information that my symphony is long and not exactly lovable.” – Johannes Brahms (1876)
“The C minor Symphony was a child of sorrow for its composer; only the D minor Concerto and the Piano Quintet caused him such grievous labour pains at their birth. The sketches for this work, which Brahms completed when he was forty-three (1876), go back ten years before that; as early as the ‘fifties Albert Dietrich saw a draft of the first movement, and the fact that Brahms persevered with this concept over a period during which one symphony after another came to nothings proof of the determination with which he pursued this project until eventually he got it into its final shape.” – Ritchard Speech (1928)
